MWC 2012: Gemalto, Sony partner for FeliCa / NFC services

Dutch digital security company Gemalto has entered an agreement with Japanese electronic services provider Sony to provide FeliCa / Near Field Communication (NFC) services on a global scale.

Under the agreement, Gemalto is set to incorporate FeliCa software technology into its UpTeq NFC SIM product lineup to deliver mobile NFC services to mobile operators and service providers worldwide.

UpTeq NFC SIM enables mobile operators to install additional applications from new service providers over time, even after issuance to end users.

FeliCa is a contactless technology that is deployed in Asia for public transportation, access management, event ticketing, customer loyalty programs and micropayments. As of March 2011, there were over 516 million units of FeliCa IC Chips worldwide, incorporated in 346 million cards and 170 million mobile phones.

In recent news, Gemalto has unveiled its new services in the NFC, M2M and LTE fields at the Mobile World Congress 2012 which takes place in Barcelona between 27 February and 1 March 2012.
