MWC 2013: Monitise, Visa showcase mobile money insights

UK-based mobile financial technology company Monitise has tripled the value of payments and transfers over its technology platform, live transactions and registered users in the last year.

The value of payments and transfers initiated via the Monitise Enterprise Platform is now more than USD 31 billion on an annual basis, compared with USD 10 billion in 2012. The global Mobile Money business is handling 2 billion transactions on an annual basis, compared with 0.48 billion in February 2012, underpinned by registered customers climbing to 20 million from 6 million in January 2012. North America is a significant market for Monitise with 10 million direct registered end users.

Additionally, Monitise is joining Visa in a press briefing and partner panel discussion at MWC 2013 to showcase the next generation of mobile payments technology being developed by the consumer payments network and its partners. Visa, in collaboration with partners such as Monitise, is delivering mobile money services toconsumers around the world, transforming the way people, bank, pay and buy.

Innovations that Monitise is delivering as it supports Visa’s mobile strategies in terms of acquiring new accounts, activating existing accounts, protecting core revenue and accelerating the move towards digital payments include: ongoing functionality enhancements to the Visa DPS Mobile Card Management Services; developing a Remote Payments Platform to provide mobile payments functionalities to hybrid markets around the world; collaboration on Visa PayWave, Visa’s contactless payments application, in conjunction with the Visa Ready Partner Program, which is available to Visa issuers globally to enable their entry and evolution of card payments to mobile payments; and supporting Visas product development of V.me by creating the mobile wallet for smartphones that extends their e-commerce acceptance to mobile devices.

In recent news, Monitise has entered an agreement with Indonesian financial institution PermataBank to launch a mobile payments service for BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) in Indonesia.
