eB Card, a prepaid smart card distributor for cashless payments, has entered an agreement with Japanese mobile operator and provider of integrated mobility services NTT DOCOMO.

Under the terms of the agreement, the companies have developed eB Cards ‘cashbee’ prepaid mobile payments service application implemented with near field communication (NFC) technology for provision on a cross-border basis to DOCOMO smartphone users visiting South Korea.

The cashbee brand has been launched in December 2010 by eB Card, an affiliate company of the food and shopping multinational corporation Lotte. It currently has about 5 million users and is accepted at 54,000 locations, including department and convenience stores in the Lotte group, as well as subways, buses and taxis.

The app is set to enable DOCOMO customers with NFC-compatible smartphones to make cashbee payments in South Korea in the same way they use DOCOMOs Osaifu-Keitai mobile wallet services in Japan. They will also use the cashbee app to obtain airport bus timetables, subway maps and coupons.

NTT DOCOMO is a developer of technologies for NFC mobile payments, mobile GPS, mobile TV, mobile assistance, environmental monitoring, smart grids and others.

In recent news, NTT DOCOMO and MasterCard have unveiled the upcoming commercial launch of iD/PayPass-branded payments via DOCOMO’s iD mobile credit payment system.
