Nokia to tap into the Indian market for mobile payments services

Finnish multinational communications corporation Nokia is allegedly planning to launch its Nokia Money mobile payments services across the entire Indian territory, media outlet deccanherald.com reports. Nokia Money is a mobile financial service looking to provide consumers with access to basic financial services via their mobile devices.

According to the source, Nokia’s mobile wallet is currently available in several Indian cities, including Mumbai, Delhi National Capital Region (NCR), Nasik, Pune, Chennai and Chandigarh. The company is planning to start its operations in other regions as well, such as Surat, Baroda, Rajkot, Lucknow, Kanpur, Kochi and Kozhikode in India.

Nokia Money enables consumers to send money to another person by using the persons mobile phone number, as well as to pay merchants for goods and services, pay their utility bills or top up their prepaid SIM cards. Nokias wallet allows its customers to have up to Rs 50,000 in cash in their mobile phones, as per the directive from the Reserve Bank of India, the source reports.

Nokia is currently partnering with financial services provider Yes Bank and Union Bank of India for its mobile wallet. The Nokia Money service is operated in cooperation with Obopay, a global mobile payment services developer in which Nokia invested earlier in 2009.
