NXP, Giesecke & Devrient team up for NFC mobile payments

US semiconductor provider for security services NXP has entered an agreement with Germany-based electronic payment services provider Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) to enable the latter to integrate NXPs MIFARE technology into its portfolio of SIM products.

Under the agreement, with the new MIFARE DESFire and MIFARE Plus-based SIM cards, G&D is set to be able to provide mobile network operators with NFC solutions for mobile ticketing as well as other mobile payment services.

MIFARE is a technology platform for contactless applications, accessible through more than 50 million contactless readers and terminals across the globe.

In recent news, UK-based technology provider ARM, Dutch digital security company Gemalto and Giesecke & Devrient have entered a joint venture agreement to accelerate adoption of a common security standard for services running on connected devices including tablets, smart-TVs, games consoles and smartphones.
