US provider of smart card-based services Oberthur Technologies has entered a partnership with airtel Africa, part of the Indian telecommunication services company bharti airtel.

Under the terms of the deal, both parties are expected to make NFC capabilities available across several countries, including Kenya, Tanzania and Gabon. Thus, the service is expected to enable mobile subscribers to pay for goods and services with their mobile phones.

Oberthur Technologies has developed both NFC-based SIM and m-commerce security services, which are expected to be deployed across fifteen African affiliates.

In recent news, airtel Africa has teamed up with international financial institution Standard Chartered Bank and MasterCard in a bid to launch a virtual card that is set to operate as a mobile wallet.
