The South African mobile operators Zap service enables customers in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to use their mobile phone to pay for goods and services, pay electricity bills, send money to friends and family, transfer and receive money to and from their bank accounts, withdraw cash, top up airtime account or top up someone elses account as well as manage their bank accounts.
Zain plans to roll out the Zap service to the rest of its Africa and Middle East network. The service was already piloted for three months by several international companies including Coca Cola which used it to pay their dealers in Tanzania. Zain provides mobile voice and data services to 69.5 million active customers across the Middle East and Africa.
