PayEx to roll out NFC-based mobile payments system for Swedish universities

Friday 9 October 2009 11:21 CET | News

Swedish payments services provider PayEx is set to install a near field communication (NFC)-based mobile payments system for a number of Swedish universities including Uppsala University and Linköping University, online news outlet nearfieldcommunicationsworld.com reports.

The contactless payments system will initially make use of NFC stickers and will later transfer to NFC-enabled phones. It will initially serve to replace PayEx-issued student payment cards, employed by students to access copying and printing services. PayEx plans to subsequently expand the system in order to allow NFC payments at other campus locations.

By the end of 2009, PayEx expects around 20,000 students to sign up for the service. PayEx developed the mobile payments system in collaboration with secure mobile solutions specialist Accumulate.
