South African organizations, namely the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship and FORUS Financial Transaction Services, are reportedly planning to launch the Mahala banking platform, media outlet ideate.com.za reports.

According to the source, the mobile banking service aims to target the South African unbanked or financially under-served inhabitants. The Mahala mobile platform is an open system and is set to be available at a nominal charge to all banks and e-wallets services providers planning to target this market segment.

As a result, Mahala customers are expected to be able to carry out free money transfers, bill payments, as well as discounted airtime top-ups and retail shopping. The Mahala banking platform is expected to go live in May 2011, the source reports.
