South Africa: Oppikoppia Music Festival to offer NFC-based payments service

Tuesday 5 July 2011 13:31 CET | News

The Oppikoppia Music Festival in South Africa is allegedly expected to provide visitors with the option to carry out NFC-based mobile payments, media outlet gadget.co.za reports.

According to the source, Hilltop Live, the organizers of the Oppikoppia Music Festival have teamed up with international financial institution Standard Bank to enable visitors to preload money onto their Oppikoppi cards, using their cash, credit/debit cards or mimoney, Standard Bank’s e-currency. To make a payment, card holders need to tap their card against a participating vendor’s cash register and the amount is set to be deducted from their balance.

Once the festival is over, any value remaining on the Oppikoppi cards is expected to be converted into mimoney. Existing as a voucher code on the user’s mobile phone, mimoney can be spent at over 25 of South Africa’s online and physical retailers, including Kalahari.net, Ster Kinekor, eXactMobile, Mr Delivery, mxit, wireless, incredibytes, edreams, mitime, exactmusic and NetForist.

The mimoney virtual payment voucher can be used as a payment option on any electronic environment. In order to buy mimoney vouchers, customers make a payment to the Standard Bank mimoney account. They then receive a mimoney voucher, which is an 18-digit number to the same value, which will be delivered to a designated mobile phone device upon purchase.

The Oppikoppia Music Festival is due to take place in the first weekend in August 2011 in South Africa.
