Square set to be made available in New York taxis – report

Friday 2 March 2012 00:56 CET | News

Mobile payments start-up Square has entered an agreement with the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission to replace the taxi TVs and payments technology in up to 30 taxis as part of a pilot program, online media outlet techcrunch.com reports.

According to the source, drivers in the pilot are set to use a version of Square’s existing software modified with new features specifically designed for taxis. An iPhone is set to be plugged into the meter from which drivers can select tolls, view current traffic patterns, receive messages and view their trip history. Additionally, an iPad is set to be installed in the partition. On the display, passengers can view information about their trip, such as their current location, running payment total and other details. Users can pay with their credit cards using the attached swiper.

In recent news, Square has closed deals with US office supplies retailer OfficeMax and retail shipping, postal, printing and business service centers operator UPS Store to make its Square credit card readers available via OfficeMax and selected UPS Store locations.
