Swedish mobile operators team up for m-payments joint venture

Monday 21 November 2011 10:33 CET | News

Swedish mobile operators Telia, Tele2, Telenor and 3 have joined forces for a joint venture aiming to make cross-operator mobile payment services available to all Swedish consumers starting summer 2012.

The partners are planning to jointly develop and market one common offering targeted at both contract and pre-paid consumers. In a statement, the partners have indicated that a cross-operator m-payments solution would allow for a safer, faster user experience and would enable merchants and partners to face less administrative costs and greater security.

In November 2010, US-based mobile carriers Verizon Wireless, AT&T and Deutsche Telekom’s subsidiary T-Mobile USA have set up a similar JV to offer mobile NFC phone payment services across the US. The Isis JV is expected to collaborate with Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover for payment processing services and with UK financial services provider Barclays for account management offerings.
