Mobile phone payment services are an important factor influencing consumers’ decision to stay with or to change banks, a recent survey has unveiled.

According to a recent survey carried out by an independent research firm for US mobile payments company Obopay, more than 53 percent of interviewed consumers consider mobile payment service a reason to choose or change their financial services providers.

The survey points out that 70 percent of respondents have stated that an option that allows them to get paid, send or receive money by mobile phone is a valid reason to stay loyal to their banks. Almost the same number of polled consumers (71 percent) have named fast/instant transactions as an important feature of their preferred mobile phone payments services.

Furthermore, when questioned about getting paid by mobile phone, 64 percent of respondents have indicated that they would be interested in accepting either personal payments or payments for their businesses from a credit card, debit card, or electronic cheque via a mobile phone.

The survey also found that 58 percent of surveyed consumers prefer services that would let them send and receive money from family and friends instantly; 56 percent of them appreciate services that would allow them to send or accept payments using a simple text message; finally, 61 percent of interviewees have stated that if mobile banking was provided by their banks, they would be more likely to use mobile phone payments.
