62 percent of US consumers who use a mobile phone would be open to make purchases via their mobile phones, especially those aged 18 to 34, a recent report has revealed.

According to the MasterCard study conducted by Kelton Research, 63 percent of US interviewees aged 18 to 34 year old would feel at ease using mobile phones to make purchases compared to 37 percent in the case of those aged 35 or older. Moreover, 65 percent of US consumers aged 18 to 34 feel more exposed without their phones than their wallets, compared to 34 percent of those in the 35 and older group.

According to the survey, US polled men tend to be more willing to use their phones for payment transactions and they perceive the transactions in a positive way, whereas women in the US are more conservative about mobile phone purchasing decisions. However, the study has pointed out that US women value the content stored on their phones more than US men do.

Moreover, the survey has highlighted that overall safety is a significant factor in the decision to carry out mobile payments. Nearly two in three US respondents claimed to need confirmation that their personal information is safe in order to be comfortable making a transaction, underscoring trust and privacy as paramount factors in changing payment behaviors.

As far as perception regarding mobile phones is concerned, the study has revealed that US consumers value mobile phones not just for the functions they can perform, but for what they say about them too. Thus, over half of respondents believe that mobile phones can tell more of their personality than their wallet.

In a separate 2010 survey conducted by MasterCard Advisors, US respondents showed a 67 percent increase in the number of purchases made with their mobile phones.
