Visa and mobile contactless developer DeviceFidelity have developed a service designed to enable Apple iPhone users to make payments by waving their iPhone in front of a contactless payment terminal.

Set to be compatible with both iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G devices, the new payment technology has been developed by DeviceFidelity and certified by Apple. It combines an iPhone case with a memory card that hosts Visa’s contactless payment application, called Visa payWave. The technology will work for both iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G devices.

In addition, the new payment method will also work with a series of smart phones that have a slot for a memory card. Mobile owners can configure their mobile phones to transform it into a Visa payment device by inserting the card into the memory slot on their phone.

Market trials of the payment-enabled iPhone have been planned to in the summer of 2010.
