Voila, Unibank to roll out mobile money service in Haiti

Friday 19 November 2010 11:36 CET | News

Haitian wireless operator Voila and Unibank, Haitis financial services provider, have received all the requisite regulatory approvals to launch a mobile money service, dubbed T-Cash.

Voila and Unibank have completed a nine month pilot program with international relief and development agency Mercy Corps and the companies have revealed plans to expand the mobile money pilot project.

Over the next nine months, nearly 100,000 Haitians in the impoverished Central Plateau and lower Artibonite regions will benefit from Mercy Corps cash programs, using T-Cash service to receive and make payments. Beneficiaries will use these electronic funds to buy food and non-food items from a network of affiliated merchants throughout the provinces, using their Voila phones.

In the first months of 2011, Voila and Unibank plan to expand T-Cash with a full suite of e-wallet services, including domestic peer-to-peer money transfer, bill pay, top up services, and expanded mobile commerce capabilities.
