Thursday 2 February 2012 | 03:18 PM CET

Online retailer Amazon has launched an online shopping service in India which enables customers to find and discover products from Indian online and offline retailers and from Amazon.com.

The newly launched website, dubbed Junglee.com, will allow online shoppers to purchase products ranging from mobile phones to toys. Junglee, which includes about 14,000 brands, does not take direct payments from shoppers who are redirected to other websites.

The e-commerce market in India has doubled from USD 4 billion in 2009 to almost USD 10 billion in 2011. Nearly USD 350 million have been invested into 40 Indian e-commerce start-ups until the end 2011 compared to USD 43 million invested in 11 companies in 2009.

India’s online retail industry is expected to jump to USD 1.43 billion (INR 70 billion) by 2015 from INR 20 billion as broadband availability becomes more common and the number of internet users is growing, according to a report released by Associated Chambers of Commerce in July 2011.
