60% of internet users in 24 countries worldwide check bank accounts online

Almost 60 percent of internet users in 24 countries worldwide have checked their bank account and other financial assets online in the past 90 days, a recent international survey has unveiled.

According to the Ipsos poll for Reuters, banking, keeping track of finances and shopping are the main activities performed by internet users around the globe. Results have also indicated that 48 percent of them have made online purchases and 41 percent have searched for a job online.

According to the source, 90 percent of Swedish adults have used e-banking, while in France, Canada, Australia, Poland, South Africa and Belgium only almost 75 percent have banked online.

The survey has also pointed out that 74 percent of people in Germany and the UK have bought something online in the past three months, followed by 68 percent in Sweden, 65 percent in the US and 62 percent in South Korea. Data has shown that almost half of people around the world have shopped online and 61 percent have searched the internet for information about products they plan to purchase. According to the survey, online shopping was the least popular in Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Hungary and Russia, where 28 percent or fewer people have bought online.

The study has revealed that 57 percent of Indians prefer to use the internet to perform banking and other financial activities rather than making online purchases.

According to the same survey, online searching for information on products and services has ranked second with 53 percent of Indians performing this activity. Furthermore, 50 percent of respondents shop for products online. The survey is based on a sample of 19,216 adults from 24 countries and was carried out between 7 and 21 February 2012.
