Pakistan: e-banking transactions up by 2.6% in October-December 2011

Online banking transactions in Pakistan have registered a 2.6 percent increase in October-December 2011, reaching 66.96 million, a recent study has unveiled.

According to the State Bank of Pakistan, the value of online banking transactions during the period under review has also grown by 4.85 percent, as compared to prior quarter ended September 2011.

The same source has mentioned that the payment systems infrastructure in Pakistan has registered an ascendant trend in October-December 2011 and a total of 91 ATMs have been added to the 5,409 ATMs already existing in Pakistan.
Results have shown that the number of bank branches which have upgraded to Real-Time Online Branches (RTOB) has reached 1,020. According to the report, currently there are 8,905 bank branches which are offering RTOB services out of the total of 9,948 bank branches across Pakistan.

Research has also indicated that the number of plastic cards has jumped by 4.88 percent. By the end of quarter under review, there were 15.2 million plastic cards in circulation in the country.

Data has pointed out that ATM transactions have also grown by 3.22 percent in the number of transactions and 8.33 percent in value reaching an average value of Rs 9,558 per ATM transaction. The repot has revealed that the number of RTOB transactions has also increased by 3.4 percent whereas, the value of transactions has risen by 4.8 percent, as compared to the previous quarter, which represented almost 30 percent volume and 93 percent value of the overall e-banking transactions, respectively.

The State Bank’s research has unveiled that the volume and value of transactions through POS terminals have reached 4.2 million and Rs 19.6 billion, showing 1.4 and 8.6 percent growth, respectively as compared to the figures reported in the previous quarter.
