UK: online banking fraud on the rise, overall card fraud levels drop

Credit and debit card fraud levels in the UK have seen significant decline over the past year, however online banking fraud is on the rise, according to the latest figures published by the UK Cards Association and quoted by online media outlet news.sky.com.

Research carried out by the UK card payments industry body has shown that the number of online banking scams grew 14 percent compared to the previous year, with fraudsters turning to malware to steal consumers’ internet banking login credentials. The number of phishing attacks was also revealed to be on the increase in the UK, with 16 percent more such attacks being targeted at British consumers in the course of last year.

Overall, losses due to card fraud totalled GBP 440 million, a 28 percent drop compared to 2009 and the first such annual drop since 2006. Counterfeit card fraud also registered a spectacular drop, falling 52 percent to GBP 80.9 million in the course of the previous year.
