Apple accepts Chinese currency for online payments

Tuesday 22 November 2011 14:39 CET | News

Apple’s online store, which sells software applications for devices like iPhone and iPad, has started accepting payments carried out in CNY in order to expand its business over the internet.

Prior to this change, the USD was the only currency in which prices were listed and consumers had to use payment cards with access to foreign exchange.

The company has taken this decision as a result of multiple Chinese fake accounts. Due to the fact that Chinese users had to use overseas credit cards to pay for applications, identity thieves could steal credit card information used to obtain Apple IDs registered to overseas customers and afterwards sell the information to Chinese customers. Apple blocked the fake IDs and returned the money to cardholders.

Apple has recently expanded in China and opened its first store in Hong Kong and its third in Shanghai in September 2011.
