Online payment transactions via the Dubai eGovernment ePay payment gateway have witnessed a 65 percent growth in 2010, compared to the prior year, according to statistics released by Dubai eGovernment and cited by the online media outlet itp.net.

By the end of December 2010, government transactions via the ePay system have climbed to 1.8 million and amounted to USD 680.6 million (AED 2.5 billion). In 2009, the collected transactions from all participating government departments reached USD 462.8 million (AED 1.7 billion).

Credit card payments have been most frequently used by the customers and have recorded USD 579.9 million (AED2.136 billion). Direct debit payments have grown from 26,357 transactions in 2009 to 54,538 transactions in 2010.

Government departments using the ePay system include Dubai Customs, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Dubai Municipality.

The Dubai eGovernment has recently entered an agreement with the financial services provider UAECentral Bank to add new banks to its ePay gateway by connecting with the UAESWITCH at UAE Central Bank. Thus, corporate or individual customers will be able to establish government departments fees through its ePay portal using ATM cards or pre-paid cards. Forty-six banks are now included in the ePay system.
