Google gives up plans for virtual currency over regulatory concerns

Friday 2 March 2012 10:18 CET | News

Google had once planned to issue its own virtual currency, dubbed Google Bucks, but had to give up the idea due to regulatory concerns, chairman Eric Schmidt said at the Mobile World Congress which was held during 27 February- 1 March, in Barcelona.

The company had developed several proposals for creating a virtual currency which could be used for person to person (P2P) transactions across its platforms, but cancelled its plans because it worried it could fall foul of international money laundering and currency compliance issues.

In recent news, Google has disabled the provisioning of prepaid cards for its Google Wallet mobile payment platform following several security concerns.
