IC3 has received over 300,000 complaints in 2011

The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has registered more than 300,000 complaints in 2011, up by 3.4 percent since 2010, a recent report has pointed out.

According to the 2011 Internet Crime Report, the top five states which have registered the highest number of victim complaints included California (34,169), Florida (20,034), Texas (18,477), New York (15,056) and Ohio (12,661). Data has shown that victims in California have reported the highest losses with a total of USD 70.5 million. For victims reporting financial losses, the average has reached USD 4,187. The same source has unveiled that most foreign complainants have been filled from Canada, the UK, Australia and India.

The 2011 IC3 Internet Crime Report has mentioned that the most common victim complaints have included FBI-related scams, identity theft and advance fee fraud. The findings have indicated that in 2011 there have been 14,350 FBI impersonation scams, 9,968 loan intimidation scams, 17,352 work-from-home scams, 4,066 auto-auction fraud and 5,663 romance scams.

According to the report, in 2011, 51.76 percent of male have filed complaints, down from 53.10 percent in 2010, while only 48.24 percent of female have done that, up from 46.89 in 2010. Regarding the age of consumers who have filled a complaint, 43 percent of them have ages between 40 to 59 and 14 percent of them are 60 or over.

The Internet Crime Complaint Centers annual report has also unveiled that the Washington DC region has registered a huge number of fraud complaints per 100,000 people, while Maryland and Virginia have also ranked in the top 10. In 2011, there have been 825 online scam reports filled in Washington, up by 6 percent since 2010.

The same source has indicated that the Virginians have reported USD 11.3 million in losses from online fraud in 2011, with 8,499 online scam reports filled. According to results, Marylanders have also accounted for USD 8.1 million in losses, with 6,299 online scam reports filled and Washington residents losses have amounted to USD 1.8 million.

The Internet Fraud Complaint Center is a joint-venture between The National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C), The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and the FBI and it was founded on 8 May, 2000 to address the ever-increasing incidence of online fraud. In 2011, in response to the exponential increase in cybercrime of all types, the center changed its name to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
