PayPal directs strategic focus towards Asia-Pacific with new partnerships, to double presence in the region by year-end

PayPal has revealed its intentions to double the number of employees in Asia Pacific from 1,000 to over 2,000 by the end of the year and closed new deals with China UnionPay and DBS Bank, as part of an action plan to double its presence and boost its growth in the region.

The new jobs will be located at all seven offices across the region including Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan. The company is set to focus on collaborating with merchants, financial services companies and local governments.

As a result of the partnership closed with China’s bankcard association China UnionPay (CUP), the latter`s card members will be able to use PayPal to pay for online purchases. CUP card members will be able to use PayPal in Q3 2010. To date, the total number of CUP card issued worldwide has exceeded 2.1 billion. In 2009, the number of CUP card inter-bank transactions reached 7 billion with a value of USD 1.1 trillion. The CUP card international acceptance network has been extended to 90 countries and regions.

PayPals mobile payment software development kit (SDK) will also be made available to developers in the region in Q2 2010. The mobile SDK will initially support iPhone application development, enabling developers to add a checkout button to accept mobile payments without the need to collect financial details from customers.

In 2009, PayPal processed over USD 6 billion of total payment volume in Asia Pacific, up 38 percent year-over-year. The PayPal service can be used in five Asian languages such as Indonesia Bahasa, Japanese, Thai, and simplified and traditional Chinese and supports payments from 190 markets in 19 global currencies, including local currencies such as the AUD, HKD, JPY, CNY, NZD and SGD.
