PayPal rumoured to expand in Russia via deal with Russian Post

PayPal is allegedly set to extend its services across Russia by entering an alliance with Russian Post, the countrys postal operator, using prepaid cards for the systems electronic accounts, media outlet Kommersant has unveiled.

According to PayPal Vice President Lauren Le Mole, the company considers Russian Post a possible provider for its services in Russia as a result of its extensive branch chain. The two companies have discussed issuing prepaid cards to pay for purchases on eBay and other online stores. Card balances may be settled using PayPal electronic accounts. Customers will also be able to use such prepaid cards in the same way as credit cards.

PayPal has already launched its services in Russia in March 2011 and has become available to Russian users in October 2011. Currently, Russian clients are only able to put money on accounts in the US banks, but they require proof of local residence or a social security number.

In recent news, PayPal has revealed plans to also enter the Chinese and Indian online payments market.
