Slovakia: Piano to extend online payment system to Europe

Monday 27 June 2011 13:00 CET | News

Founders of Piano Media, a subscription-based media content payment system, are set to expand the online payment system to other European countries, online media outlet spectator.sme.sk reports.

Piano Media has registered a net income of over EUR 40,000 in mid-June, since its launching in May 2011. Piano enables payment via a common paywall for unlimited access to niche areas such as sports, entertainment, video, opinion pieces and archives. Users’ payments are split between the publications based on how much time is spent on individual sites.

The paywall is supported by Slovakias three national newspapers, namely the business daily Hospodarske Noviny, Pravda and SME, alongside a sports daily, two leading magazines, a television network, an IT magazine and video portal. General news continues to be free and some websites do not include advertising.

Piano is a premium-content payment service for newspapers, TV stations and other online services jointly operated by Etarget, a provider of online advertising and NextBig, a new media consultancy company.

When the system was launched, 34 services from 9 participating publishers, including major Slovak news media such as the Sme daily and Trend and Týžden weeklies, have been included in the package. A second wave of publishers based in Bratislava is expected to join the Piano project.
