At the end of June 2009, the number of local banks connected to the CUP Secure internet-based payment platform, developed by Chinese bankcard association China UnionPay, reached twelve, cctv.com reports.

These banks include the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the Agricultural Bank of China, the Bank of China, China Construction Bank and the Bank of Communications. CUP Secure provides a four-party payment system for card issuers, acquirers and merchants and enables CUP cardholders to make online purchases. With CUP Secure, they also gain access to fee payment and inter-bank credit card payment services.

According to the same source, China UnionPay has also announced plans to create a Standard China Union Pay Card Network for customers across 34 Chinese cities to allow cardholders to make payments by swiping the card at telephone terminals, make credit card payments, pay for public service fees, make mobile phone payments and pay offline for products and services ordered online.
