In the UK, 21 percent of the adults (one fifth) who have made a purchase online have fallen victim to online fraud, according to a survey carried out by the research and consulting organisation YouGov and commissioned by eWise payo.

The research has revealed that 88 percent of polled UK online shoppers have either been the victim of online fraud or are concerned that this is likely to happen to them in the future.
95 percent of surveyed UK online adults have reported that they have made purchases online within the interval under review, while two thirds of them have stated that they pay for goods online at least once per month.

Almost 69 percent of respondents have indicated that they are worried about security when making online purchases, while 54 percent have confirmed that they have abandoned an online purchase in 2010 due to possible fraudulent attacks.Analysing responses by age group, the study indicates that the percentage of consumers who have stated that they are concerned about online security has increased with age. The study also highlights that 20 percent of the online shoppers have chosen debit cards as main payment option when asked to choose between two payment methods while shopping online.

Nearly 64 percent of surveyed UK online shoppers were found to have abandoned an online purchase due to speed and difficulty problems while making a payment. 72 percent of online shoppers who own an online banking account have stated that it would be better if their bank provided a payment option to enable them to pay for goods online directly from their online banking account, without sharing account information with the merchant.

In January 2011, eWise has rolled out eWise payo, an Online Banking ePayments (OBeP) service which is set to enable customers to make payments for goods and services or bills online, without having to provide personal financial information to a third party. To use eWise payo, customers are directed straight to their banks website where they log in using their existing account credentials, then proceed to choose an account with available funds and confirm the payment, once they are logged in their online banking application. The eWise technology enables the payment via the UKs Faster Payments network.
