Italy: Banca Intesa Sanpaolo, Western Union in money transfer deal

US-based payment services provider Western Union has inked a contract with Italian financial services provider Intesa Sanpaolo.

Under the terms of agreement, Western Union will offer money transfer services in Italy via ATMs by the bank’s account-holders. Starting with July 2011, the Intesa Sanpaolo’s network including 7,200 ATMs will benefit from Western Union money transfer services. In addition, the service will be available in 700 standalone kiosks inside Banca Intesa Sanpaolo branches and via internet and mobile banking. Money transfer services are also targeted at 500,000 migrant clients who need to transfer money abroad.

Consumers can access Western Union’s service via bank accounts belonging to the banks of Intesa Sanpaolo Group or via a SuperFlash prepaid card which can be purchased from any branch or online.

In 2009, Western Union registered 196 million consumer-to-consumer transactions worldwide, moving USD 71 billion of principal between consumers and 415 million business payments.
