US domain name registration technology company Networks Solutions warned over 4,000 of its nearly 10,000 e-commerce merchant customers that a breach of its servers may have led to a credit card data theft potentially exposing around 570,000 individual records.

The sensitive credit card details belong to customers who carried out purchases on various websites hosted by the company, ComputerWeekly reports. According to a statement released by Networks Solutions, the data was stolen between 12 March and 8 June 2009. Among the compromised details were the victims’ name, address and credit card numbers.

The breach was carried out using malicious code installed on Networks Solutions servers hosting e-commerce customer sites which diverted credit card transaction data to external servers. The company has indicated that so far, it has no reason to believe the stolen data has been used fraudulently, however it has notified law enforcement authorities and has started notifying its customers.
