Pakistan: Payment systems infrastructure registers increase

The payment systems infrastructure in Pakistan is on an upward curve, recent research has unveiled.

According to a review released by State Bank of Pakistan and cited by www.brecorder.com, during October – December 2011, the volume of overall online banking transactions in Pakistan has increased by 2.6 percent, reaching 66.9 million. The same source mentions that the value of these transactions has grown by 4.85 percent reaching Rs 6.454 as compared to July- September 2011.

Research has also indicated that the number of real time online branches (RTOB) transactions jumped by 3.4 percent to 20.3 million, whereas the value of these transactions increased by 4.8 percent to Rs 5.968 trillion in same quarter as compared to the previous quarter, which represented almost 30 percent in volume and 93 percent in value of the overall e-banking transactions respectively. According to the same data 1,020 more bank branches were upgraded to RTOB during the last three months of 2011.

The review has pointed out that 91 more automated teller machines (ATMs) were added and as a result, the company’s ATM number has reached 5,409. The number of ATM transactions has gone up by 3.22 percent, reaching 40.1 million, with the value of transaction at Rs 383, up by 8.33 percent.

According to the source, the number of plastic cards has also grown by 4.88 percent, registering to 15.2 million plastic cards in circulation in the country during October – December 2011.

The volume of transactions made via POS terminals has jumped by 1.4 percent reaching 4.2 million, while the value of these transactions increased by 8.6 percent reaching Rs. 19.6 billion.

According to the review, the volume of large-value payments made via Real Time Gross Settlement System (RTGS) has risen by 2.8 percent to 89,263, whereas the value of these transactions increased by 21.4 percent Rs 30.47 trillion.
