Thursday 27 August 2009 14:43 CET | News

UK metro operator Nexus, the brand name for the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive (TWPTE), has been awarded a GBP 13 million grant by British authorities to upgrade its ticket machines in preparation for the implementation of a smartcard ticketing system on the public transport network.

The grant was awarded by the UK Department for Transport and covers the upgrade of 225 old ticket machines, which will be fitted with devices which will allow them to accept notes and card payments. Automatic gates are also set to be installed in 13 of the Nexus-operated 60 Metro stations. The upgrade program is set to be completed by 2012.

TWPTE operates one of the two underground metro-type systems in the UK outside London.
