Western Union receives commercial bank and foreign exchange brokerage firm license approvals in Brazil

Global payment services provider The Western Union Company has received license approvals from the Brazilian Central Bank and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to operate a commercial bank and foreign exchange brokerage firm in Brazil.

Effective immediately, the license will enable Western Union to offer its money transfer services directly to consumers in Brazil and to introduce new financial services, including domestic money transfers, consumer bill payments as well as prepaid cards.

Western Union has provided international money-transfer services in Brazil since 1998, through its local agent network that currently includes nearly 6,000 bank and foreign exchange brokerage firm locations.
