The OFAC guidelines, effective from 3 September 2009, allow persons in the US to send remittances to close relatives in Cuba. The “close relatives” designation includes aunts, uncles, cousins, and second cousins who are Cuban nationals. They also remove the limits on the total amount and frequency of remittances sent to Cuba by US consumers.
Once compliance with OFACs guidelines has been achieved, Western Union is planning to expand its agent network in Cuba in order to increase the availability of its services to both US and Cuban consumers.
Western Union has been providing money transfer services from the US to Cuba since 1999, in accordance with OFAC laws. Western Union currently has 3,000 agent locations authorized to send Western Union money transfers from the US to Cuba, and more than 100 agent locations in Cuba.
